Tongue & Groove’s mission is to create theater that combines the dramatic integrity of playwriting with the playful tension of spontaneously generated work. We aim to explore rich emotional, intellectual, and physical relationships, both comic and dramatic in tone. In other words, Tongue & Groove aspires to create physically dynamic, emotionally arresting, serio-comic theatre…that happens to be improvised!

Our new format premieres at the Philly Fringe Festival: UNSPOKEN:
Before the show we ask the audience to take out their cell phones and anonymously transcribe stored texts or emails onto index cards. On a different card, the audience writes something they want to say to someone but haven't. The ensemble is inspired by this variety of unspoken words to create a one-of-a-kind serio-comic performance that reflects the spirit of each unique audience. The show includes improvised 'Instant Messaging' scenes, as well as nonverbal scenes accompanied by live improvised music by our newly hired harmonica player, Carol Moog!

"Though it's true that the action and dialogue are spontaneously created onstage, this carefully crafted procedure will explode your expectations about what improvisation can be.  The performers …are funny, and masters of timing, but they dig deep into human behavior and motivation.  You'll see …. [the] human experience, raw, painful, smart, sharp and beautiful, And you'll laugh till you get a head rush." phawker.com
